Sabine Field

For generations, historic Sabine Field has served as a picturesque venue for storied athletic contests. In 1920, Dr. George K. Sabine, Class of 1868, provided the funds to purchase the land where the field now stands. Born in 1847 in Windsor, Vermont, Sabine began his college education at NU in 1865, and was among the classes to move with the school from Norwich, Vermont, to Northfield. During his senior year, he was adjutant of the Corps. Following his 1868 graduation, he attended Harvard Medical School, and went on to practice medicine for half a century. Dedicated in 1921 in memory of his son, George K. Sabine, Jr., Sabine Field originally included a baseball diamond, quarter-mile track, and football gridiron. In winter, it was flooded for ice hockey.
