On March 30, 1905, at the annual meeting of the New York Alumni Association, 1851 graduate General Grenville M. Dodge, by then a Norwich Trustee, announced that steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie had offered Norwich University a gift of $50,000 to construct a four-story building. Completed in 1907, the building housed the library on the top two floors with the bottom two home to the electrical engineering department. Modernized in 1952 with funds donated by Trustee Henry Prescott Chaplin, it was rededicated and renamed the Chaplin Library. A decade later, to accommodate a growing Corps of Cadets and increasing numbers of books, a wing was added. In 1978, a fire which started in the basement damaged 3,000 books and sent five student firefighters to Central Vermont Hospital. When Kreitzberg Library was completed in 1993, Chaplin became home to the School of Architecture + Art, as it remains to this day.
